One of the major social issue for any country is ensuring justice and equality for the differently abled people. India is home to 2.68 crore differently abled people as per Census 2011. With 1.5 crore males and 1.18 crore females, the country’s differently disabled population rose by 22.4% within a span of ten years. The demographics suggests that the urban areas in India have low differently abled people than rural areas. Whereas when it comes to facilities and infrastructure, there nothing in the rural areas, not even specialist doctors.
Whenever the government authorities have failed to address issues, non-governmental organizations have come forward to reduce the burden. Similarly, to address the prevalent issues related to the disabled people in India, several NGOs has been contributing significantly for the cause of inclusive development.
Ability Foundation, EnAble India, Udaan, Tamana, Asha Bhavan Centre are some of the major NGOs who are dedicated towards welfare, growth, development and empowerment of the differently abled people in India. There are also organisations such as give India who urges people to donate or sponsor for a tricycle or a life-skill training session for deaf or multiple disabled person. It is understandable that such NGOs in India have a collective dream to build a world without barriers for the disabled and are definitely dedicated towards uplifting those who are struggling against all the odds and evils of modern day society such as poverty, illiteracy and social inequality.
It is expected that the NGOs will play a crucial role in making India a differently abled friendly country. Thereby, leaving behind a legacy of sustainable and inclusive development which the future generations will be proud to inherit.
